Playter resigns from Roughriders

Tony Playter has resigned as the director of football operations with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Playter has accepted a position as a manager of media communications with SGI. He informed the Riders about his decision on Wednesday.

“It was a very good opportunity,” said Playter, who will remain with the Riders through July 1 and start his new job on July 2. “It was one of the toughest things that I had to when I talked to (general manager) Eric Tillman, (president and CEO) Jim Hopson and (head coach) Ken Miller about not being here anymore.”

Playter, 43, has had two stints with the Riders. He was the director of communications from 1993 to 2001 before leaving to pursue other interests. He returned in 2004 as the director of football operations. He also earned a Grey Cup ring as part of the 2007 championship with the Riders.

“While we are sorry to see Tony leave us, we realize this is a great opportunity for him and his family,” said Hopson. “Tony has been a long-time member of the Rider family and his contributions will be greatly missed.”
