Pringle was almost forgotten

The year was 1994, and Mike Pringle was well on his way to becoming another one of the many forgotten running backs to have come and gone through the Canadian Football League.

Released by Edmonton as a rookie and then traded by Sacramento to Baltimore, he wasn’t starting for the Stallions and wondered, justifiably, about his future in the game.

“It was a very frustrating time,” he said. “I was beating my head against the wall to achieve my dream, and the doors just weren’t flying open.

“I’d just been traded to a team I’d never heard of. There was a phone booth in our dormitory at training camp. We were breaking camp and I decided to call my mother. I’d made the team but wasn’t starting. I told my mother it was going to be my last year in football. She told me to go out and play hard. Fortunately, things changed.”

It wasn’t long before Pringle was starting for the Stallions. He rushed for 1,972 yards that season and 1,791 the next, scoring 13 touchdowns both seasons. And the rest, as they say, is history. Pringle was well on his way to becoming a superstar while defining the position.
