Regina Bars Prepare For Grey Cup!

Final preparations are underway in Regina for the 95th Grey Cup in Toronto.

The Queen City is buzzing with excitement as game day draws near and finishing touches are being done throughout the city.

Restaurants, bars and sports bars are also getting final preparations done as they expect high volumes of patronage for Sunday’s big showdown between the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“We’ve got our green beer on tap and prize giveaways throughout the game,” said Jason Pageot, general manager of the Brewsters east location. “Pilsner is doing a big push, everything is decorated in green.”

Pageot said his “whole crew” will be working throughout the game and that everything is now up and ready to go. Prizes include a Roughriders jersey, T-shirts, dufflebags and hats.

“We haven’t had to increase our brewing because it’s done in 500-litre tanks, but certainly we’ve increased our orders for the offsale,” Pageot said. “It has been busier in the last few days and we expect that to continue throughout the weekend.”

Soula Cabylis, owner and operator of Tomas Cook Restaurant and Sports Bar, said she’s been ready for this weekend since the preseason.

“I’ve been ready since June,” she said. “I decorate the whole place before it all starts.”

Cabylis said she expects a big crowd for the game, but said the turnout is great for every Riders game. She also intends to give out prizes throughout the game, but said the game day specials are what generally draw the crowds in.

“We’ve got our regular beer and wing specials along with our ‘Touchdown shooters,’” she said with a laugh.

Jason Weinkauf, manager of Stats Cocktails and Dreams, said he has also increased the bar’s liquor order for the weekend and expects it to be a very busy night.

“We’ve got our 20-cent wings, lots of beer, and everyone will be dressed in their Riders gear,” he said.

The Regina Police Service is asking fans not to over-consume alcohol and reminds them that consuming liquor in a public place is against the law. For those who do engage in public intoxication, the police will be taking action to enforce the law. The same can be said for those who consume alcohol and make the decision to get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle.

“We will have enforcement of drinking and driving,” said Elizabeth Popowich, spokeswoman for the RPS. “As always, we encourage those who are drinking to plan a safe ride home.”

The City of Regina said it has no plans for a parade of its own to celebrate the Riders’ return, however the Riders are urging fans not to travel to the airport on Monday because a celebration of the team’s accomplishments will be held at Mosaic Stadium at 3 p.m. on Monday. Fans are invited to fill the stands for the short program.
