Richardsen talks to Gazette

For everyone who has complained that the Alouettes lack a big-play receiver who can go deep and stretch the defence, their prayers might have finally been answered.
Montreal has signed veteran wide-receiver Jamel Richardson, who spent four seasons in the Canadian Football League with the Saskatchewan Roughriders before he attempted unsuccessfully to crack the roster of the Dallas Cowboys in 2007.
The 26-year-old will provide a big target for quarterback Anthony Calvillo. Richardson is 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. Although he played only 30 regular-season games for the Riders, he caught 113 passes for 1,471 yards, scoring four touchdowns.
“I think I’ll bring that edge and toughness,” Richardson told The Gazette from his winter home in Syracuse, N.Y. “I’m physical and explosive. And I’ll bring a swagger back to that team.”
Early this decade, when the Als were at their best and regularly participated in the Grey Cup, they boasted four 1,000-yard receivers. But Montreal didn’t appear as formidable at the position after Jeremaine Copeland departed for Calgary as a free agent in 2005.
Although the Als attempted to establish the run at times last season, they still had a pair of 1,000-yard receivers, in Ben Cahoon and Kerry Watkins. With the addition this year of new head coach Marc Trestman comes the belief the team will revert to a pass-oriented offence in an attempt to improve upon an 8-10 record.
