Riders fined for second time in 2 weeks

The Saskatchewan Roughriders have received two more bills, totalling $1,000, from CFL headquarters.

The Riders learned Wednesday that receiver Mike Washington has been fined for a dress-code violation he committed in Friday’s 36-29 overtime victory over the host Edmonton Eskimos.

Washington was ticketed $500 for wearing an undergarment bearing an Under Armour logo. The display of that logo is prohibited because Under Armour is not a CFL sponsor. The Riders were fined an additional $500 because of Washington’s choice of wardrobe.

That was the third time the league has levied a fine to the Riders in 2007.

General manager Eric Tillman was fined $1,000 on Sept. 26 for making disparaging comments about the B.C. Lions organization.

Two weeks ago, the Riders were fined a total of $10,000 for what the league perceived as disparaging comments about the officials. Tillman and head coach Kent Austin were fined $2,500 apiece. The Riders’ organization was fined an additional $5,000.

The league adhered to its policy of disciplining people for criticizing players when three members of the Eskimos were fined Wednesday.

Mike Maurer, Sean Fleming and William Loftus each received fines for their comments after Friday’s game. The league did not disclose the amounts, but it is believed that each player was fined $500.

The three players lashed out at referee Andre Proulx after Maurer was assessed a holding penalty that negated a 47-yard field goal by Fleming with seven seconds left in a tie game. That field goal would have given Edmonton a 32-29 victory and extended the Eskimos’ hopes of qualifying for the playoffs. It would also have capped Fleming’s final home game with the Eskimos.

“Sean was robbed. We were robbed,” Maurer told Vicki Hall of the Edmonton Journal after the game. “The fans were robbed of something pretty cool, pretty special. Now this game is going to be remembered for all the wrong reasons, and the CFL doesn’t need stuff like that to be remembered by.”

George Black, the CFL’s director of officiating, said in a statement Monday that Proulx technically made the correct call, but the league would have preferred it if he had used discretion and kept the flag in his pocket. The Eskimos were flagged by the CFL, apparently to the tune of $1,500, two days later.

“Consistent with our league policy that has been applied to all teams this season, the players were fined for making public disparaging comments towards CFL officiating,” the league said in a statement released Wednesday.

Due to an agreement with the CFL Players’ Association, the league does not disclose the amounts players are fined. The league has greater latitude in publicly disclosing assessments made to coaches, GMs and team executives.
