The Saskatchewan Roughrider announced the re-signing non-import running back Wes Cates to a one-year plus an option contract.

Financial details of the signing were not released.

”As an organization, we are thrilled to announce this signing,” General Manager/Vice President of Football Operations Eric Tillman stated. ”Wes is a complete back in every sense of the phrase. People focus on his running and receiving skills, which certainly are significant, but few backs in this league block as well as Wes does. That toughness, which shows up in blocking and playing through injuries, sets a tone which is conducive to continued success at the highest level.”

Cates was acquired by the Riders from Calgary for Rob Lazeo and a conditional draft pick in 2009 just prior to the regular season. Cates started 14 regular season games, the West Final and the Grey Cup at running back.

The 28-year old led the Rider rushing attack with 866 yards and five touchdowns on 152 carries this year. He also had 45 receptions for 452 yards.
