The Saskatchewan Roughriders have officially signed Kitwana Jones.

The veteran linebacker/defensive end was released by the Edmonton Eskimos on Wednesday and signed with the CFL’s Roughriders early this evening.

Jones, 28, spent the first four seasons of his CFL career with the Roughriders before being traded to the Eskimos in May for quarterback Juan Joseph. Saskatchewan cut Joseph after training camp.

Jones played nine games with the Eskimos, registering seven tackles, 10 special-teams tackles and a quarterback sack so far this season.

“We’re very pleased to welcome Kitwana back,” Roughriders director of player personnel Joe Womack said in a media release. “Sometimes you get lucky in life and this is one of those days.

“We’ve seen the flip side, of course, with the very unfortunate injuries to Rey (Williams) and Kye (Stewart), which really hurt us, especially with the special-team units. Kitwana will help us significantly in that area, and, whatever role (defensive co-ordinator Gary Etcheverry) gives him with our defence, we know he’ll play with great passion and energy.”

In 64 games with the Roughriders, Jones had 91 tackles, 51 special-teams tackles, seven quarterback sacks and five tackles for a loss.
