Riderville: Thoughts from opening day

First impressions can be more deceptive than an Enron financial statement.

This column is written with the understanding that what you see or hear today can be rendered irrelevant by November, or even by 3:30.

Nonetheless, people are curious. “What do you think of the Saskatchewan Roughriders so far?” is a prevalent question. The beginning of main training camp is three days away, but fans are still arriving at or requesting snap judgments.

So here, without further preamble, are some admittedly premature, yet potentially life-altering, thoughts following Day 1 of rookie camp:

Ken Miller will be fine — at least with the media. Nobody can fully appraise Miller as a head coach until meaningful games begin in a month’s time. Part of his job, though, is dealing with reporters, who are a conduit to the fans.

So far, so good. Miller answered our questions with substance and good humour following Wednesday’s workout. The final question was posed by our man Darrell Davis, who asked: “Do you look forward to meeting us every day now for the next six months?

“This could be the last time,” Miller responded, to considerable chortling.

Comparisons to Miller’s predecessor, Kent Austin, are inevitable — so here is another one. Austin was cautious with the media following the introductory workouts last season.
