Sask fans react to big time trade

The big, big, BIG news of Kerry Joseph’s departure was initially reported on leaderpost.com at 2:12 p.m., during a Wednesday afternoon.
Fans’ hearts were broken as quickly as the story.
“Awful trade” read the subject line of one e-mail.
“Say it ain’t so,” wrote another fan, who was equally despondent to discover that Marcus Crandell will replace Joseph — who is now a Toronto Argonaut — as the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ starting quarterback.
“I love the Riders and I renew my optimism before every new season, but I simply cannot envision how the Riders will be able to repeat last season’s success with the questionable-at-best moves (general manager Eric) Tillman has been making this offseason,” read an excerpt from another e-mail.
The reader was alluding to the departures of head coach Kent Austin, tailback/returner Corey Holmes, defensive end Fred Perry and linebacker Reggie Hunt, followed by Wednesday’s announcement that Joseph — the CFL’s most outstanding player in 2007 — has been dispatched to Toronto for defensive end Ronald Flemons, offensive tackle Glenn January, the Argos’ first-round selection in the 2008 Canadian college draft, and a future draft pick.
“The so-called trade appears to be a giveaway or a dumping of an excellent player,” read another lament. “Is Tillman defending the Grey Cup or dismantling and rebuilding a championship team?”
