Scott Schultz couldn’t be prouder of the latest Moose Jaw product to join the CFL.

Schultz, a defensive tackle with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and a native of Moose Jaw, was pleased when Dylan Barker was selected first overall in the 2008 CFL draft by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Barker, who played safety with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, was the second Moose Jaw product to be selected with the first pick in the CFL draft. Schultz was selected first overall in 2001 by the Roughriders.

“I’m always proud of Moose Jaw, but to have a No. 1 pick from there is tremendous,” Schultz said Monday. “Too bad the Roughriders didn’t get him but I know that he’s going to be great player. His athleticism and size are two big things that should really help him.”

Joe McGrath, an offensive lineman from Moose Jaw, was selected second overall by the Calgary Stampeders in the 2003 draft. McGrath is entering his fifth season in the CFL as a left offensive tackle with the Edmonton Eskimos.

“We all know that there is only one real guy from Moose Jaw,” Schultz said with a laugh. “The other guys are just pretenders. I hope that (Barker) does well, just not against the Roughriders or any other team that I’m playing for.”

The first round of the draft was eventful for Schultz. The Tiger-Cats selected Barker then the Roughriders used the fourth overall pick to pick defensive tackle Keith Shologan from Illinois State. Shologan has signed with the NFL’s San Diego Chargers but Riders general manager Eric Tillman feels that Shologan is the heir apparent when Schultz retires.
