Smart uses his head, legs in returner role

It took an all-star season last year for Ian Smart to realize there is no shame in being known as the best returner in the CFL.

That point became only more sharply focused Wednesday when it became evident that Joe Smith will not play for the Lions against the Blue Bombers due to a shoulder problem. As expected, Smith will be replaced by rookie Stefan Logan, who worked out at tailback for the third straight day.

An uneducated view of the depth chart might result in the conclusion that Logan is getting the call ahead of Smart, who is starting his third season here.

With Wally Buono, however, it’s more a recognition of the work done by Smart returning kicks. When you log 2,135 return yards last season and are named special teams player of the year, you’re an asset. The view of special teams on the Lions, based at least on the amount of time given in practice to the kick and cover units, is such that playing on offence is almost a demotion.

“I’ve found my niche,” Smart told anyone wondering Wednesday whether Logan’s start left him irritated. “The best thing someone ever said to me is that everyone is here to do certain things in life. An arm is an arm for a reason. A leg can’t be an arm. I’m a returner for a reason. I respect that my job is to be a returner.”

So the backfield start goes to the pint-sized Logan, who in no way resembles Smith in physical stature, and, for one game at least, gives the Lions a chance to dabble in a different offensive style.
