Stamps defense has agenda

Dwight Anderson just couldn’t hold himself back.
The defensive back had just picked off a pass, tipped by running back Jon Cornish, and amid an explosion of cheers from his defensive mates on Day 3 of the Calgary Stampeders’ training camp at McMahon Stadium, he let loose.
“I told you I’m back in my proper form,” he hollered, livening up a grey, dreary day.
The Stampeders would love to see that ball-hawking form throughout their defence after a season in which they forced just 34 turnovers, next to last in the Canadian Football League.
“That’s the main concept coach (Chris Jones) is trying to install; loose balls, picking them up, returning fumbles, just running to the ball,” said Anderson, a free-agent signee from Hamilton. “That’s going to condition you so that when game-time comes, we’ll have that explosion. This is just training to get to this point.”
Part of that training is urging defenders to scoop up every loose ball and run with it, regardless of whether or not it’s a live ball.
That attitude produced a splendid morning scrimmage for the defenders Tuesday, as they repeatedly picked off passes and stripped footballs from ball-carriers.
