The Calgary Stampeders signed four new receivers, and traded a defensive back and a line-backer to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for future draft picks Friday.
Stamps head coach and general manager John Hufnagel says the addition of Vincent Marshall, Titus Ryan, Jermaine Jackson and Johnny Thomas will add depth to the offence at training camp.
“They add depth and good competition,” said Hufnagel. “Some of them have special-teams value, which we’re trying to stress a little more this year.”
A speedy University of Houston product, Marshall played five games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders last year and three games in 2007. During the 2008 season, he had nine receptions for 145 yards and one touchdown. He also returned seven kicks for 160 yards and six punts for 67 yards.
Ryan had National Football League stints with the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints.
Hufnagel described him as a polished player with good hands. In 2008, Ryan was on the Carolina Panthers practice squad. He played one year for Concordia College in Selma, Ala., following a two-year stint at East Central Community College.
Jackson will add a strong physical presence, says Hufnagel.
He comes from Saginaw Valley State University, where he played five years, including one redshirt season. He followed that with a season with the Port Huron Pirates in the Great Lakes Indoor Football League in 2006 and a stint with the Fort Wayne Fusion of Arena Football League 2 in 2007.
Hufnagel expects to see some athletic catching ability in Thomas, who will arrive at camp having played two years at Southwest Mississippi Community College. He made 71 catches for 998 yards and 13 touchdowns in 14 games.
Meanwhile, the Stamps traded defensive back Lenny Walls to Winnipeg in exchange for a conditional second-round pick in the 2011 CFL Canadian draft and sent linebacker Neil Ternovatsky to the Blue Bombers for a sixth-round choice in the 2012 draft.
With the linebackers he has coming to camp, Hufnagel says Ternovatsky would’ve been on the bubble.
“I’m glad I was able to find Neil an opportunity to play,” said Hufnagel.
The Stamps open their training camp on June 7.
