The Toronto Argonauts officially named Rich Stubler as the team’s head coach Thursday at a morning press conference.
Stubler, who has been with the Canadian Football League club for the past five seasons as assistant head coach/defensive co-ordinator, replaces Mike (Pinball) Clemons, who stepped down as head coach to become the team’s chief executive officer.
“Rich was the unanimous choice for this position,” said Adam Rita, the Argos’ general manager and vice-president of football operations.
“Rich has done an outstanding job for us as assistant head coach/defensive co-ordinator and has a desire to do this job, so it’s a match made in heaven. This move provides us with leadership, continuity and experience.”
Stubler, who first started his coaching career in the CFL in 1983, has also had stops in Hamilton, Edmonton and British Columbia. He has four Grey Cup titles to his credit.
The Argos finished atop the East Division this past season with an 11-7 record, before losing to Winnipeg 19-9 in the division final.
