The latest training camp signing by the Lions, announced Tuesday, is also the latest sign the CFL club intends to address one of its top offseason priorities.

In signing Clarence Coleman to a contract, the Lions are hoping to strengthen the import receiving spot held last year by rookie Cory Rodgers.

Coleman, 27, caught nine passes during the 2004 NFL season with the Buffalo Bills. Rodgers, 25, averaged less than two catches a game last year.

Earlier, B.C. signed Eric Kimble, a 24-year-old who hasn’t played professionally since leaving Eastern Washington University, giving the Lions five import receivers for camp already, besides Geroy Simon.

The fourth receiver spot was designated by coach Wally Buono as an area for improvement, but another offseason signing announced last month could end up addressing a short-term need.

With any kind of decent training-camp showing, import offensive lineman Clint Stickdorn may be pressed into service. The club is bracing for the possibility that left tackle Rob Murphy won’t be at the opening of camp June 1 due to the pending arrival of triplets in his family.
