Ticat notes for August 5th

Courtesy Hamilton Spectator:

The B.C. Lions just keep giving to DeAndra’ Cobb.

For the second time this season, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats running back has been named the CFL’s Offensive Player of the Week after playing the Leos. And this time he brought a buddy to the podium as linebacker Jamall Johnson won defensive honours.

Cobb carried the ball 17 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns in Hamilton’s 30-18 victory against the Lions last Friday, while Johnson racked up 10 defensive tackles, one quarterback sack and one forced fumble. In just four games this season, Johnson has racked up 34 defensive tackles, the second-highest total in the league.

Ticat safety Dylan Barker was named runner-up for Special Teams Player of the Week after recording three special teams tackles and forcing a key fumble on a kickoff return.

With a number of defensive linemen nicked up, the Ticats have signed CFL veteran Montez Murphy.

The 6-foot-6, 256-pound native of Mississippi spent the 2008 season with the Edmonton Eskimos, recording 24 defensive tackles and three sacks, before attending training camp with Winnipeg this season.

“He was a guy that played well against us when he was with Edmonton. We thought he had a bit more going for him as far as knowing the league,” said general manager Bob O’Billovich.

Defensive tackle Darrell Adams practised yesterday for the first time since being hurt against Montreal and end Khari Long continues to recover from an ankle sprain.

The Ticats also announced that the team has released import defensive lineman Michael Landry, signed just last week.
