Ticats lay an egg in home opener
Courtesy Hamilton Spectator:
Hot, sticky and stinky.
The first Canadian Football League season-opener in Steeltown in 31 seasons had the malodorous scent of the last few Ticat openers as the Montreal Alouettes ripped the Cats 33-10.
While starter Casey Printers threw well, he couldn’t overcome the drops, fumbles, mistakes and boneheaded penalties that continue to plague the black and gold.
Head coach Charlie Taaffe warned there would be some growing pains for his young club. He didn’t mention they would be excruciating as his club dropped its season opener for the fourth time in a row before an announced Ivor Wynne Stadium crowd of 20,587. Few were left when this stinker concluded.
Anthony Calvillo tossed two touchdown passes to Kerry Watkins, who had a monster game. Avon Cobourne had a three-yard scoring run. Damon Duval had four field goals.
The victory was the Als’ rookie head coach Marc Trestman’s first in the league.
It was a historic night for Calvillo. He overtook former Hamilton quarterback Danny McManus for second spot on the CFL all-time career passing yardage list.
There was certainly precious little for the homeside to celebrate save for Tre Smith’s 75-yard touchdown dash with four minutes to play.
