Toronto: Bruce benched

Courtesy Toronto Star:

The Argonauts will be heading to Winnipeg this morning without their top receiver.

Media reports say Arland Bruce III was informed yesterday that he is being left at home for disciplinary reasons.

The Argonauts declined comment but the team said head coach Bart Andrus would be making a statement today after the team arrives in Winnipeg for a game tomorrow night against the Blue Bombers.

With three Canadian receivers already on the shelf with injuries, the 1-2 Argos would be leaving themselves a little short-handed without Bruce. He would likely be replaced by rookie import Hank Edwards, who has yet to play a game this season.

Bruce, who leads the team’s receivers with 14 catches for 199 yards, put himself in the new coach’s doghouse during the first game of the season when he was penalized 30 yards for excessive celebration. The celebration, which Bruce said was a tribute to Michael Jackson, also earned the import receiver a fine levied by CFL headquarters.

It is believed the team fined Bruce as well, though the Argos would not comment on that.

However, Andrus did say he was impressed by the fact that Bruce voluntarily apologized to the team the day after the game.

The Argos are looking at wide receiver Cory Rodgers, formerly of the B.C. Lions.

They earlier took a look at former Winnipeg receiver Derrick Armstrong, who was released by the Bombers for disciplinary reasons, but decided not to sign him.
