Tucker awaits verdict

Jason Tucker managed to nosh on soup and Jell-O and visit with his wife Giesla on Sunday in the aftermath of surgery to fuse his spinal column.
Doctors at Hamilton General Hospital planned to wait for results of further medical tests today before declaring the four-hour operation a success.

But the Edmonton Eskimos are confident their all-star slotback is out of danger and on the mend.

“I think Jason is feeling better,” said team president Rick LeLacheur, who remained in Hamilton to keep an eye on the receiver.

“But you never know with Jason. I told him after the game that he had to tell the doctors if he was in pain. But he never said anything. He just won’t complain.

“He finally got to have a sponge bath today, so I think he’s happy about that.”

Tucker fractured and dislocated the C6 and C7 vertebrae near the base of his neck Friday night in a head-to-head collision with Hamilton defensive back Jykine Bradley.

On impact, both Bradley and Tucker crumpled to the turf at Ivor Wynne Stadium. Tucker had the raw instinct to pounce on the ball to retain possession for Edmonton.

After about five minutes, Bradley made it to the bench on his own steam, but sat out the rest of the game with numbness that ran from his right shoulder down to his wrist. The feeling came back by the end of the night.
