Winnipeg Free Press writer takes a look around the CFL

Training camps opened in seven other CFL cities Sunday. Here’s a brief glimpse at some of the issues facing the Bombers’ rivals:

B.C. LIONS

Campsite: Abbotsford, B.C.

The Big Question: Who wins the No. 1 QB job? It was Jarious Jackson last season, although he was replaced by Dave Dickenson in the West Final. But with Dickenson now in Calgary, Jackson will be pushed by Buck Pierce, who has future star written all over him if he can just stay out of sick bay.

CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Campsite: McMahon Stadium.

The Big Question: John Hufnagel returns to the CFL as Calgary’s new GM and head coach. First order of business: Fix a defence that was run over for much of last season. Questions abound as well about the depth on the O-line and how quickly their young hog prospects can develop.

EDMONTON ESKIMOS

Campsite: Clarke Park.

The Big Question: A pile of changes in the Alberta capital — how quickly can Danny Maciocia transform them into a contender? Landing Noel Prefontaine from the Argos was a steal and fills a huge hole.

SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

Campsite: Mosaic Stadium at Taylor Field.

The Big Question: Ken Miller replaces Kent Austin as head coach — can he transform Marcus Crandell the way Austin did Kerry Joseph? This is still a very good football team despite the upheaval this winter, but the Crandell question is a big one.
